Organ Scholar

Owen Spicer has been our organ scholar for the past three years. He has been studying organ and piano with Karen Schuessler for six years. He has played services at his home church of Wesley Knox United and Trinity Lutheran in London.

Owen plays in the Kiwanis Organ Festival each year and has won the Paul Westermeyer Hymn Playing scholarship two years in a row. He has also been awarded the top exam marks for Conservatory Canada province-wide. This spring he played organ recitals at St. James Cathedral Toronto and St. Paul’s Cathedral London.

This fall Owen moves to Montreal to attend McGill University for the four-year Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance.

St. Martin-in-the-Fields has an opening for an organ scholar position beginning in September 2019. This position is an outreach project supported by the parish.

The candidate must have a piano proficiency of Grade 7. The organ scholar receives free instruction from the organist in playing the Anglican liturgies (both The Book of Common Prayer and The Book of Alternative Services). A commitment of one lesson and one service a month is required and the organ scholar receives an honorarium. In addition to the monthly requirement, the scholar plays four weeks in the summer to cover the organist’s holidays. An honorarium would be paid. The organ scholar must have access to transportation.
